The Advent calendar—a Christmas tradition that has become an integral part of the holiday season. It’s just as much a part of the Christmas season as Santa Claus, the Christmas tree, and presents.

History of the Advent Calendar

The original idea of an Advent calendar emerged in German-speaking countries as early as the 19th century and was intended to help pass the time until Christmas Day. Especially for children, for whom the concept of time is very abstract, this significantly increased their anticipation and made the wait easier to bear.

However, these were not yet the Advent calendars we know today, but simply Christmas-themed pictures or chalk drawings hung up each day on door frames and cabinet doors.

The idea of the printed Advent calendar, as we traditionally know it today, dates back to 1904, when Gerhard Lang published his Advent calendar featuring texts he had written himself and Christmas motifs. He was inspired by his mother, who, when he was a little boy, sewed 24 pieces of pastry onto a numbered piece of cardboard for him.

Gerhard Lang, a native of Malbronn in Baden-Württemberg, had many ideas and tirelessly developed new Advent calendars. The chocolate Advent calendar was one of them.
