The History of Christmas

Contrary to what many people believe, the origins of Christmas do not lie solely in Christianity. In fact, Christmas is a pagan festival, overlaid with late-antique, ancient Eastern, and Catholic liturgical customs, intended to celebrate the rebirth of the sun, the Twelve Days of Christmas, the turn of the year, and the gods and spirits.

The term “Christmas” is derived from the Germanic word “wiha,” which means “holy.” Consequently, Christmas translates to “holy night,” referring to the night of Jesus Christ’s birth. That is why most people are familiar with the Christmas story:

Mary, a young woman, becomes pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Together with her husband Joseph, she travels to Bethlehem to register for the census. Since there is no room for them in the city, they give birth to their child in a stable and lay him in a manger.

That same night, angels announce the good news to the shepherds in the fields. They hurry to the stable to see the newborn child. The three wise men from the East follow a brightly shining star and bring gifts to the child: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Christmas Today

Today, we recognize that Christmas has already become largely secularized and extends beyond the church. It is celebrated in many countries around the world, especially in Western countries with a Christian tradition—particularly in Europe, North, South, and Central America, New Zealand, and Australia. But other countries as well—especially more modern Western and Eastern nations such as Japan and China—also enjoy celebrating Christmas, albeit in a slightly different way than we do here.

In Germany, December 24 is traditionally Christmas Eve, while December 25 and 26 are considered Christmas Day and Boxing Day, respectively. It is a time for family, affection, love, and reflection. Everyone associates many—and sometimes varied—traditions with this very special time of year.
