The history of Christmas
Contrary to what many believe, the origins of Christmas do not lie solely in Christianity. In fact, Christmas is a pagan festival, overlaid with late antique, ancient oriental and Catholic-liturgical customs, which was intended to celebrate the rebirth of the sun, the nights of raunächte, the turn of the year and the gods and spirits.
The term "Christmas" is derived from the Germanic word "wiha", which means "holy". Consequently, Christmas is translated as "holy night", meaning the night of the birth of Jesus Christ. This is how most people know the Christmas story:
Mary, a young woman, becomes pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Together with her husband Joseph, she travels to Bethlehem to register for the census. As there is no more accommodation in the town, they give birth to their child in a stable and lay it in a manger.
That same night, angels announce the good news to the shepherds in the field. They hurry to the stable to see the newborn child. The three wise men from the East follow a brightly shining star and bring gifts to the child: gold, frankincense and myrrh.
Christmas today
In the present day, we recognize that Christmas has already been largely secularized and goes beyond the church. It is celebrated in many countries around the world, especially in Western countries with a Christian faith, particularly Europe, North, South and Central America, New Zealand and Australia. However, other countries, especially more modern western and eastern countries such as Japan and China, also like to celebrate Christmas - albeit a little differently to how we know it here.
In Germany, December 24th is traditionally Christmas Eve, while December 25th and 26th are considered Christmas Day and Boxing Day. It is a celebration of family, affection, love and contemplation. Everyone associates many, and sometimes different, traditions with this very special time.
